Eager to commercialise this new material, DuPont first tested nylon in toothbrushes before focusing on women’s hosiery. With silk stockings expensive in the 1930s, ‘nylons’ became a cheaper, snag-resistant alternative, sparking riots as women scrambled to buy them.

During the Second World War, DuPont shifted nylon production to military use, manufacturing 25 million pounds annually for ropes, nets, and parachutes. Alexandre and Leon also patented another product called Stylo-Fard pour les livres- a ‘blush pen’ for the lips. This is quite possibly my favourite item in my entire collection! I have three of these in my collection-two in this particular style and one in a clear-coloured version from the 1950s. I find them incredibly beautiful. While I’ve never used a face powder brush like this, I can’t imagine getting accustomed to it. I love the detail of rouge still lingering on the bristles. It makes me wonder about the lady who once used it. Who was she? What was her life like?
